How the Fair Chore Splitter Works
Traditional chore wheels fail because they treat every task identically and ignore busy schedules. Our algorithm balances workload mathematically so everyone contributes their fair share.
Availability-Weighted Capacities
Account for busy work schedules, study hours, or unequal living arrangements. Total chore hours are distributed in direct proportion to each person's available weekly hours.
Effort & Duration Weighting
Chores are measured in actual time units (from 15-minute quick tidies to 2-hour deep cleans). This prevents one roommate from getting stuck with multiple heavy chores.
Preference & Dislike Optimization
Prioritize assigning tasks people actually like doing while avoiding hated chores whenever possible, eliminating household nagging and chore resentment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about calculating and dividing household chores fairly.
How does this calculator split chores fairly?
Unlike traditional chore wheels that treat a 5-minute task the same as a 2-hour deep clean, the Smart Chore Splitter weights each chore by its duration (15 minutes to 2 hours) and distributes total weekly hours proportionally based on each person’s available hours. If one housemate has more available time than another, tasks are divided proportionally to maintain balance.
Can I account for roommates with different busy schedules?
Yes. In the People section, adjust the weekly available hours for each housemate. The fairness algorithm calculates each person’s target capacity percentage and assigns tasks so everyone contributes proportionally to their availability.
How do chore preferences and dislikes work?
In the Preferences section, you can specify tasks each person prefers or dislikes. The scheduler prioritizes matching chores with people who enjoy them while avoiding disliked tasks whenever possible, without sacrificing workload fairness.
Can I export the schedule to Google Calendar or Apple Calendar?
Yes. Once your weekly schedule is generated, click "Download Calendar (.ics)" to export all chore events directly into Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, or any standard calendar application.
Do I need an account to use the Smart Chore Splitter?
No. The Smart Chore Splitter is free to use directly in your browser with no account or signup required. You can test presets, build custom schedules, and download calendar files instantly.
